A very important question \u2014 we sometimes overlook\u2014 is: how relevant is agency in this process? To begin with, agency is the ability we have to influence and change our life conditions. In this context, it is the key that opens the door to decision-making, allowing each child to become the architect of their own world while learning to manage small responsibilities that, over time, will shape the essential skills of the future. <\/p>\n
By establishing clear schedules for daily activities such as sleeping, eating, studying, playing, and completing tasks, parents provide a safe framework within which children can grow and develop. It is important that these routines are adapted to the child\u2019s age and individual needs, ensuring they have enough time to rest, enjoy themselves, and learn. A key element in creating these routines is involving children in the process, as this gives them a voice in organizing their day and reinforces the importance of autonomy and decision-making. <\/p>\n
Another essential aspect of this process\u2014one that largely depends on us as adults\u2014is recognizing that children learn by observing. As a result, we are responsible for the behavior we model. When we follow organized routines, fulfill our responsibilities, and take care of our environment, children are more likely to imitate these behaviors and become better equipped to follow their own routines. <\/p>\n
It is also essential to show flexibility when unexpected situations arise, as this helps children learn to adapt to changes within a routine.<\/p>\n
We should celebrate our children\u2019s achievements when they complete a task, follow a routine, or even show effort in doing their responsibilities. By acknowledging their effort and commitment, parents reinforce the importance of responsibility and perseverance\u2014even when a task is challenging or takes time. <\/p>\n
The development of agency in childhood is also reflected in how children interact with their social environment. When they are allowed to have a voice in family decisions or group dynamics, they learn to express their thoughts, negotiate with others, and develop a positive sense of identity. Through these interactions, children reinforce the idea that their space is one where they are heard and where their opinions matter. <\/p>\n
Routines serve as a fundamental foundation for children to develop responsibility, autonomy, and a healthy relationship with their environment. By establishing clear daily structures and assigning age-appropriate responsibilities, parents provide children with the tools they need to manage their space and time.
